Patrice Lubumba was killed because the US thought he was a communist, or at least open to it… and they then backed up the brutal one-party dictatorship that followed because they thought it would stop the USSR from having too much influence in Francophone Africa. (We did this elsewhere… and yet we claim to be the bastion of democracy.)
