The Roosevelt Island Tram used to be like the one in New Mexico, when one left 2nd Avenue, the other left the island… until a bunch of faults and malfunctions left BOTH stranded over the river, which was a nightmare for the fire department’s rescue teams. Now they run independently with massive electric motors running the cables on the island side. The tram is good if something goes wrong on the subway, because there is a station on the island (which is technically car free, aside from maintenance and emergency vehicles, oh and the bus that goes around. There is a bridge into Queens that goes into a parking structure on the island, in case do you own a car and live there.
