Damascus steel is easy, there's plenty of videos on youtube on how to orient carbide crystals in steel across the blade by forging many layers of steel in similar manner as in candy making. In market theory you redistribute the risks into many alternative technologies and different locations in such a manner that profits are generated from negated risks, so basically your concerns are always calculated and if not it will create market opportunity.

I feel like it's not just randomness, but rather a lack of holistic understanding of a bigger picture. What always bothered me was that even when particles behave in a wave like manner (interference and such) I never thought of it as weird or unpredictable, but rather as an inability to measure all the interactions in the system (including every atom in slit as in a double slit experiments, or just some resonant fluctuations if such thing is even possible in probabilistic models). OK, I have no idea, but it's very interesting. Maybe few episodes of "Quantum Leap" will bring some light on the subject.

I remember two axioms from one of my professors: 1) every task can be solved by hardware means 2) every task can be solved by combination of software and hardware means. It all depends on your task. In a similar manner you can outcompete runners on your motorcycle, but in order to outrun them you need to be a better runner.
