  1. MIG = metal inert gas. Uses a continuous wire as an electrode and filler material surrounded by an inert gas. TIG = tungsten inert gas. Process uses a fixed tungsten electrode and separate hand fed wire as filler also surrounded by an inert gas. Tig is much more controllable and can by turned down to weld aluminum soda cans or razor blades or way up. Usually best for exotic metals.
