Actually the history of the pilgrims is very interesting and the opposite of what you are saying. England at that time had ended decades of religious turmoil and was in a live and let live phase of religious freedom. Not everyone was happy about that, they believed it was too liberal. They were angry the govt was not persecuting Protestants and Catholics. So, the fundamentalists left... on the Mayflower.

Interesting question! I think we know the answer. But it would be great to have that demonstrated.

@lindaharvey9285 you're right about that. But the later people left Europe for the idea of vast sunlit western lands. Not to escape the Govt policies, which is what the original post was rightly about (because the early people did flee Govt policies).

@juliestanfield8433 right. And it's also interesting that France spent so much money helping America get rid of their King that it bankrupted France and let their people know how to get rid of their own King! Whoops.
