You're right, people can do good things for their workers simply for the purpose of doing good. That's why people believe THAT was the case initially. Otherwise, everyone would be suspicious immediately someone does something good. And it's usually people who have experienced love-bombing and subsequent devaluation that will notice the red flag in a charm-offensive.

Usually they SAY they are highly intelligent or "whip-smart" or nonsense like that. Mostly they are quick studies and know how to work other people. I watched "Inventing Anna" on Netflix which was based on a true story, Anna also believed she's smarter than everyone else. She could read fast and understand what the people around her were motivated by. I think a lot of manipulative people are like that. Instinctive and cunning. Which is confused with being smart. I doubt they'd be able to come up with a better way to use plutonium or create nuclear energy without irradiated waste. That would need a genuinely intelligent person, not just some up themself a*hole who claims they are. And I do agree with your grandmother, genius and madness are closely related.
