  1. This was always on the cards after Ukraine rejected the earlier negotiation in Turkey based on Russian withdrawal in return for Ukrainain neutrality. Ukraine did this on the instructions of the US sent through UK. After Russia started taking Donbass, Russia made it clear that peace terms now would mean not only neutrality, but ceding Donbass and Kherson. They have done what they said they will do.

  2. Who is the west to decide it is a sham ? The majority in Donbass are Russian. After the Nazis were defeated, the Allies held elections under their rules to find people who will run the govt. according to their precepts. Were they sham ?

  3. Why is the west so agitated about the referenda ? Just ignore it. After all, it has been telling us Ukraine is advancing at great speed in Kharkov, Donbass and Kherson, and was on course to liberate Crimea in a few days, due to the high morale and superior arms of the Ukrainians.
