  1. If the Ukranian casualties are correct, it is condemnable that the west urged Ukraine to mount this Kherson offensive to make them more eligible for continuing western aid. Then Russia said it will go ahead with a technical military operation to ensure US bases were not placed in Ukraine in the eventuality it joined NATO. Ukraine had the opportunity to remain neutral. It declined and sought NATO membership and indulged in Russophobia, thinking the US and NATO would protect it. Ukraine sent 5000 troops to support US and NATO in Afghanistan. Why ? It hoped that would help entrance into NATO. Then NATO should have reciprocated and sent troops to Ukraine to fight Russia. Instead, Biden and NATO announced they will not send ground troops. It is sick and horrible that the US and NATO after encouraging Ukraine with the possibility of joining NATO, left them in the lurch and did not send troops to Ukraine. Instead, the west is cynically sending weapons and asking the Ukrainians to get massacred indefinitely. Why has the west not negotiated an end to end Ukraine's misery ?

  3. You have been reporting on Bakhmut for weeks. It was not in the usual media channels. However, two days ago, in the BBC, there was a report on attack on Bakhmut. The reporter, Orla Guerin, looked and sounded very glum and despondent. From her tone, I could see loss of Bakhmut was anticipated. The BBC is preparing its viewers for the news on the possiblity of loss of Bakhmut. All this time, they had their viewers elated by stories of Ukraine getting back Crimea.

  4. The Ukranians announced they are raising a 1 million army to recapture the southern lands and Kherson. It could be a tactic to influence the Kherson referendum as Alex says. It could also be a tactic to keep western donors interested in continuing their aid. The moment donors start feeling it is a losing business, they may cut their losses and abandon Ukraine.

It can export some grain because Putin gave permission (the President of the African Union appealed to Putin). Further, Russia's offensive has re-started, they are after Bakhmut. Ukraine's counter offensive has petered out. Russia withdrew from Kherson and then shelled it from the other bank and made Kherson unlivable. Some weeks back they said Ukraine's war damages are $ 700 billion and this will keep going up and cross 1 trillion. No one has the that sort of money to rebuild Ukraine. Besides, Ukraine cannot be rebuilt without Russian permission. Russia is an essential part of Ukraine's fate.

That seemed odd and very dramatic considering I read the Ukranians were unable to reach even the first line of the Russian defence. It seems the entry into Crimea was a one day symbolic media invasion for their independence day. It is not in the media anymore.

  22.  @110Bradford  In business, often people pour money into a company that has been losing. But the losses continue but eventually someone takes the action to close the company. Likewise in such situations. It takes longer in political issues because of false pride and the inability to admit defeat. But eventually, the business factor acts here also. In the Afghan war, the US decided they could not afford the war - after 20 years. Someone took the action based on purely business terms - it was a waste of money when America has ageing infrastructure. Someone will realise that Ukraine cannot win, it is a waste of money, and the west cannot afford the energy crunch and the economic fallout. The false pride factor is because the west encouraged Ukraine with promise of NATO induction, and pronounced at the outset Putin cannot be allowed to stop it. Either Germany will stand up or if Americans feel the economic pinch, they might tone down their Ukraine support.

As they saw that Ukraine could not hold on to Donbass, they told them to create this diversion to uphold western support and money flow. Just like they pressured them to do the 2023 counter offensive. The attack on Kursk is senseless militarily, as the Ukranian forces are thinned down even more and it is not sustainable.

  54.  @16252  Unfortunately the Donbas is not Russian... Ukraine's borders of 1991 are arbitrary and there is nothing sacrosanct or holy about it. Crimea, Donbass, Odessa were built and settled by Russia during Catherine the Great's time. These areas were attached by Russia to Ukraine during the formation of the Soviet Union. Sovereignty does not give one the right to invite and give bases to a distant nuclear power, to threaten a neighbour. Ukraine played this wicked game and therefore Russia has cancelled its independence.

  59. The British are singularly crafty in making neighbours fight, and in inciting regime change operations, while claiming lofty morals and values. They did that in India and all their colonies. They pretend disinterest but are after wealth. They have a duplicity in their character. However, the game they played for centuries does not work with present day Russia. The British take pride that they were leading the escalation, they were the first to give tanks forcing the Germans and the US to give tanks, the first to give Storm Shadow missiles etc. But none of that changed the situation on the battlefield. Stalin retorted 'numbers' is also a quality. At the end of the war, Germans produced a super tank, but few of them. The Soviets even knocked some of them out by running into them, knowing the Germans could not make new ones and bring them to the front in time. The Ukranian soldier told the Guardian the Ukranians did manual demining at night and created a corridor for advance. He said now that a corridor has been demined, the advance was straightforward because the 2nd and 3rd Russians lines are poorly defended. We don't know, but that is the assertion of the Ukranian soldier reported by the Guardian as fact. Once the corridor is demined, the Guardian makes out that it is straightfoward for the Ukrainian armoured vehicles to advance without opposition. The expectation is the Russians will crumble and surrender. This kind of hopeful reports of breaching the line and impending Ukranian advance has been going on in the western media, but I still see no lightning move towards the Sea of Azov. Expectation and hope does not seem to match the actuality. On Sky News, I saw self-contradictory propaganda by Sean Bell. He was reporting on the Abrams tanks. The reality is frustrating and the sense of being defeated is humiliating, so people console themselves with the media telling us 'Russia is losing'.

Earlier, they thought US would be part of it. Now that even US's commitment to NATO is in doubt, it is left to British, French and Germany. But they don't have the resources, manpower or technology. In UK, a company called Reaction Engines that was supposedly spearheading a campaign to make hypersonic missiles by 2030 collapsed financially. Whereas Russia has used hypersonic missiles and they are virtually unstoppable. Patriots may knock 2% down if all 32 missiles are fired in a salvo, but it is on a hit and miss working mode.

They said that two weeks ago, but that story is quietly dropped now. It is just sour grapes; you defeat causes burning. Some 4 weeks back, the Daily Telegraph said that the Ukrainians have started their offensive, they have crossed the Dnieper, and seized some islands and this was start of the big showdown to take Crimea. That story sank without a trace in a week. It is replaced by claims that Ukraine is doing testing attacks here and there, and that is preying on the nerves of the Russians. Just think of this. The US and its 50 cronies were defeated in Bakhmut by convicts with shovels. If I was you, I would salute the Russians for defeating 50 countries and their arms and money. You should also realise by now that you are not fighting Afghanistan or Iraq, you are fighting someone with the capacity to destroy all western cities, hence you and your surrogate cannot win. You need to swallow your false pride and come to terms with reality.

  186. I would recommend Russia to disband Wagner, and the Chechen militia. Privatising military affairs was started by the US with Blackwater. Russia copied this model and took it too far. Creating such groups is dangerous as it makes a parallel power centre. There should be only one Russian army. The western hope is now that it will be a stalemate, then they think Russia will agree to freeze the conflict and the west agrees to cede Donbass and Crimea, and the quid quo pro would be the remaining Ukraine will be admitted to NATO and the US will get the coveted missile and naval bases. But Russia will not agree to the quid pro quo above. The Russian quest is not territory, but de-militarisation of Ukraine. That means, no NATO bases in Ukraine.

It will be like the artillery shells. The Russians can turn Ukraine into a wasteland which is permanently dependent on EU aid. They will not allow any reconstruction. As for demographics, what about Ukraine ? 30% of its population is refugees. Ukraine has lost a lot of men in Bakhmut to no avail. The war is lost for the west. The US sent troops to Iraq to evict Saddam from Kuwait (although the US encouraged Saddam to invade Kuwait and sold arms), so if Russia has robbed Ukraine of its vital areas, why does the US not send troops to Ukraine ? The reason is the US and its European allies do not have the courage to fight Russia. In that case, why did you encourage Ukraine to think it could get into NATO ? The US is shameless and has let Ukraine down.

They declared Putin must not be allowed to win, Putin should be removed etc. Russia will never accept again the US, UK etc. as guarantors of Ukraine. Russia will never allow Ukraine into Crimea. One foot into Crimea, and Ukraine will be hit with a nuclear strike.
