The answer is actually quite simple. money! Sponsorship and money! Americans have their own motor sports, so the interest there in F1 might be growing, but it's mostly a European sponsored and financed sport! Drivers don't get into F1 purely on the basis of ability! Being sponsored and having financial backing is actually the most important! European car brands are central to F1 engines, so it's more likely the winners will come from European nations. There will be the odd one here and there but ultimately, people get into motor racing thru having money! It's a rich man's sport!

@shamrock141 try and break in with no sponsors. It's a upper class sport! Look at Mick Schumacher. Is he there on merit?

@shamrock141 Nope. You're terribly mistaken. Lewis had a supportive dad who knew how to build carts and took him racing. Lewis was already registered with McLaren all the way back to 1998 when he was 13 years old. He was receiving financial backing from a young age. That's not to say he isn't an amazing driver. He is. But if you want evidence as to the importance of money, just look at the F1 cars and the jump suits. Completely covered in advertising. There are talented drivers all over the world. But what you need is at least one major backer to pay for you into the sport. And they don't do it out of charity. They're doing it to make money. There will always be exceptions of course.

@shamrock141 Here's a list of Mick Schumacher's backers. All of the back of nothing more than nepotism.Ferrari Driver Academy, Richard Mille, Deutsche Vermögensberatung, and Under Armour. Additionally, the German is endorsed by Schuberth, Ravenol, and SSI Schaefer.
