That's not true. I'm a Kurd from Northern Iraq. When I was a child, my parents who are both surgeons were doing their medical studies in Baghdad. I would go and visit them, and as a child, my dad would take me here. Unfortunately, the older generation were never taught to swim. Iraq itself has very little access to sea and in the old days, most of my family didn't even have cars to get around. I moved to italy at 13 and my gynaecologist mum still can't swim, and is scared of water. But both of my sisters are wonderful swimmers, as they had swimming lessons from young age. Contrary to western belief, most Iraqi's are secular. Yes, I'm a Kurd so we aren't controlled by religion but when growing up, we never had such gender related divisions.
