Spain have been the same Spain for my entire lifetime. When it comes to pure footballing DNA, they are the best country for developing footballers who at one with the ball regardless of their position on the pitch. BUT. The issue Spain have always had is putting balls in the back of the net. 2008, 2010 and 2012 happened because of Torres and more importantly Villa. Top class centre forwards proven at a high level and comfortable when putting the Spain jersey on. They didn't have a striker or two at the level of Villa and Torres before, and definitely not since. We beat them on penalties in the Euro semi finals but they deserved the win. They were the only team who comprehensively outfootballed Italy, and made Italy defend. But if you can't convert possession into goals, you have a problem.

@andrewjoyce9038 do elaborate!

@andrewjoyce9038 the irony of mentioning nonsense 🤣 Spain consistently produce players who are comfortable on the ball, are in tune with possession based play regardless of what club they play for and that's why it is almost impossible to see a national team play them and keep the ball off them!

@PeteBigChief I've been lucky to witness every world cup sine 1990! Raul was a great player! A true great but not for Spain at major tournaments like villa and Torres in seventeen games across the world cup and Euros, Raul scored six goals! Compare that to villa score scored nine in twelve in the world cup, six in eight in confederations cup and four in four in the Euros! Torres meanwhile scored nine across the world cup and Euros and also eight in the confederations! These modern strikers superbly complemented Spain's style as they not only could finish but they also contributed in the build up and also be relied upon for their physicality! They brought a dimension that Raul unfortunately couldnt! In the semi vs Italy in the euro, they had easy chances to finish Italy off before the penalties! Inferior strikers like morata and moreno missed chances that top strikers would've lapped up!

@safarit678 possession based football is about movement, excellent touch on the ball, awareness of where you are on the pitch and real teamwork! If you can't underrated that, then I'm sorry for you!

@safarit678 Utter nonsense. Look through every great team in history and you'll see that when it comes to possession stats, they are usually in the positive. Young? I lived through Milan's late 80's and early 90's glory period. We were very good at attacking as a team and defending as a team, but we were always superior in terms of keeping the ball, because we had technically superior players. Spain won everything thanks to possession based play and so did Barcelona. Ajax's entire ethos is also based on keeping the ball. Go and ask any manager if they prefer their team or the opposition to mainly have the ball. The longer you don't have the ball the more likely you'll concede.

@safarit678 there are of course always going to be anomalies. Like Mourinho parking the bus in Barcelona and managing to get results. If you are arguing vs the reality that it is more likely you'll lose if you don't have the ball, then you clearly are deluded. It isn't about obsession. It is simple footballing fact. Look at Man City. Win year in year out. Why? Because they nearly always have the ball. The more you have the ball, the less likely your opponent can hurt you. I mean you are literally arguing vs common sense.

@safarit678 1. when was the last time Mourinho won anything of note?? Zidane and Ancelotti aren't possession based coaches?? haha. Carletto made his name at my home club. Did you watch the Milan of the 2000's? 99% of teams would sit back vs Milan because we had technically gifted players who could hurt you through what? Playing hoof ball? Nope. In fact, we barely even ever played with wingers, because our game was very much passing and possession based. Liverpool? hahahaha. 2. Liverpool have spent in excess of 700 plus million since Klopp went there. They have one of the most expensively assembled lineups in european football. Paid 70 plus million just for their goalkeeper ffs. 40% possession?? Klopp's game is literally based on high press, high intensity and winning the ball back quick. You are literally arguing vs yourself. 3. Read my initial comment. What does it say? It clearly says that Spain were successful with their possession based played when THEY HAD TOP GOALSCORERS. And that they're suffering to kill teams off as they don't have goalscorer. I never said that possession is the be all and end all. I said that to win a football match, your chances are drastically higher IF the ball is at your feet more times that it is not. Spain are an example! A litmus of pure footballing class. They are so consistent with producing technically gifted players. BUT. As I've clearly stated ' But if you can't convert possession into goals, you have a problem.'
