After only being willing to take a 50% pay cut?? haha. That's still nearly 40m per year. Even if the whole of Naples pitched in, they couldn't afford it. He's go to the money printing Arabs. either Man City or psg.

This man earns tens of millions in endorsements, appearances at events, advertising, image rights etc etc. If he REALLY didn't want to leave, he could've done what many self respecting CEO's do when taking token salaries. Messi is 34 and he has not only secured his and his kids' future, but also his grandchildren's 100 times over. His salary was in excess of 70m. The biggest burden on a club, albeit a woefully run one for which you can't blame Messi. As someone from Milan and a lifelong football supporter, its these days that remind me of just how incredible characters like Costacurta, Maldini and BARESI were. Baresi for one stayed with Milan despite a few very difficult years. He put the club and its wellbeing above everything. It is when I see these money grabbing characters that I feel blessed to have had people like Baresi playing for my club. ⚫️🔴

@nikolaškorić90 What Spanish law? An agreement in this case is between one private individual and a private institution. This isn't as if he's working for a public sector department or organisation. 50% of his pay would still be 35m Euro. Is the law there because they think Messi would starve on 35m euro? He made double his current salary just in endorsements last season.

@Ren_1090 you're absolutely right in that the overall wage bill is an issue regardless of his income. But he can indeed play for free. La liga rules in terms of income do not override European Union employment laws, the right to a private individual to enter into a private contract or where the person wishes to ply their trade. There are umpteenth examples of ceo's taking token 1 euro salaries whilst on the board of an institution. For example. Barcelona as a private venture must have shares / stake in businesses connected to the club. They could've given Leo certain shares in return for a pay freeze, with the shares being returned post the salary being paid within a certain time period.
