If you act neighbourly in London, people almost trust you less. There is this ever-growing mentality that if you say hello to someone or try to help, that you must have a need in return. That you must have an agenda. I live in a small residential complex. From day one, I tried to befriend my closest neighbours. It has taken nearly 5 years to get them to a mental state where if I'm willing to help or share some food with them, I'm not doing it for some sort of exchange of service. It is so strange. I remember trying to introduce myself to a new couple who'd moved into the flat below. It was early evening and all i said was 'hello'. The young lady looked at me in a way that almost made me feel like I'd done something wrong. These people have got to a stage where they're so self-centered and self-involved, they'd only message me or call me when they know i might help them with a problem.
