To many watching this, it is just a comedy sketch to laugh it especially with it being a reflection of reality in many a companies. But for those who have gone through this, it is quite difficult to watch.
I did my law degree here in the UK (got a 1st). Having done work experience during my uni years at law firms and solicitor's offices, I quickly realised that it wasn't for me. Fast forward to the summer when I graduated, I had no money so I started working for a recruitment company very close to our home. Initially I just looked at it as a job to gain some office based experience and also to earn some money. But about a month in, I realised that I wasn't all that bad at generating new business, and actually filling roles. It is important to point out that they started me on a salary of £17,000 which was ridiculous. Especially as 2 months before, I had turned down a legal graduate programme with a major UK bank - starting salary of £35,000 (my parents went nuts for me turning it down). The £17,000 they were paying me barely covered my rent as well as train travel. So while I'm working 0800 to 1830 5 days a week, the owner of the company had his son working with us as a 'resourcer'. Unlike me, the son had attained poor GCSE grades, and also not done so well at colleague - basically pulled out after 1 year. This kid who was only 17-18, was driving into work in a brand new M3!!!! He was supposed to be MY resourcer, and yet he was driving into work in a FKN M3!!! It just began to dawn on me that I couldn't possibly take the company seriously because I knew that one day, I'd end up actually reporting to a kid who achieved virtually nothing at school but will now become my boss simply because his dad owned the business.
Seven months in, I received an offer from a business to go and work in Zurich, Switzerland. Not only was it a wonderful opportunity to go and work abroad, but also the starting salary was literally 4 times what I was earning. It was a simple no brainer. When I handed in my notice, they began getting super aggressive - basically bullying me. Shouting at me, calling me a sellout, and how I was somehow spitting in their faces for walking out on them. And I thought well this is my chance to tell them the truth. I told the boss that whilst I'm starting from zero despite being a uni graduate, his son who is supposed to be working under me is earning more money and also driving a FKN M3!!! I mean what message does that send to aspirational people? Anyway - they put me on a month's gardening leave and the final salary as well as commission I was due didn't get to me until 5 months later. In the end, I literally had to threaten them with legal action. There was people like me doing everything I could on an entry level salary, and yet they still felt entitled enough to withhold my pay. Never again.
