  3. First and foremost - No I don't think it's a good idea to cut down trees to build a cycle lane. Whilst he was talking in this piece, 24 bicycles went by in the background. Says we should have an 'intelligent debate' instead of throwing insults and yet says 'they can all fuck off'. Make up your mind...! What upsets me about people like Clarkson is that they're basically not looking to appeal to a wider audience, but putting their opinions across for the simple reason of appealing to the people who'll agree with them. The reasoning as well as opinions aired in this piece highlight him as ignorant, narrow minded, bigoted and stuck to one way of thinking. Let's firstly deal with the money issue. Holland park happens to be in Kensington. Having lived on Brook green for many years, the reality is that the councils in Hammersmith and Kensington are in most cases in surplus when it comes to budget and income. These are councils and boroughs that are doing extremely well. The whole idea of spending 40 million on a scheme that could encourage more to cycle and maybe reduce traffic is really not going to be an issue for them. What though is annoying is people like Clarkson crying wolf over 40 million, all the while our wonderful government continues with schemes like HS2 with a budget that continues to grow to the point of essentially being out of control. That along with the fact that we don't even as yet know when it will actually finish. There have been umpteenth examples of tax payers money being wasted on schemes as well as the saving of failing businesses...but oh no no no...let's call the idea of a mere 40 million being spent on a cycling scheme in one of the wealthiest places in the country as a complete waste of taxpayers' money. His argument against the building of cycle lanes is that it causes traffic and the hold of ambulances, potentially resulting the death of patients. Why not also highlight lowering investment in the road and rail infrastructure as well. Secondly. His other argument vs the benefits of cycling is the cyclist needing to eat post getting to and from work. Eating an avocado from the other side of the world to make up for the lost energy when cycling. It might come as a shock to him, but someone maybe needs to inform him that normal people, young and old eat avocados regardless of whether they cycle or not. In fact, normal human beings burn energy doing daily tasks meaning they have to eat too. What an utterly pathetic argument. Give open minded people the platform to talk and air their opinions. We don't always have to side with one argument. You can look at issues from all angles and still come across as relevant. A rich old man with very little understanding of the wider society sits there and spews abhorrent statements like 'you get on a bus to catch a disease' in order to induce laughter shows him for what he is. Not everyone has access to a car. Anyone living in London will know that people are sat at bus stops and underground station at all hours of the day, needing to get to places in order to earn a living. Realities that this complete buffoon is clearly very oblivious to.
