Newfoundland could of joined the USA as it was at one time an independent country but couldn't financially make it on its own. The British Empire made sure that wasn't going to happen and made sure it was going to join Canada. Not sure you would want them now as they are pretty socialist. If Greenland wants to join fine but this sounds like a distraction to more pressing issues really.
