dothemathright 1111 Santos Dumont 14 bis could turn, at that time to be recognized as a plane by the FIA the aircraft should be able to turn and Dumont demonstrated that in front of a huge crowd in France in 1906, he flew "only" 220 meters but the machine was able to take off by itself without any gliding mechanism and land safely. This was the first heavy-than-air complete flight in history, with self propelled take off, turning and landing. Writgh brothers could sustain longer flights but they used a gliding rail mechanism and there were virtually no witness for their flights. For me Santos-Dummont is the first man to fly in an airplane. In 1908 Santos-Dumont designed the Demoiselle, a pratical and cheap to build airplane that would became the first mass produced airplane in the world, the american magazine Popular Mechanics said this about this aircraft: "This machine is better than any other which has ever been built, for those who wish to reach results with the least possible expense and with a minimum of experimenting." American companies sold drawings and parts for Demoiselles for several years afterward.
