The Gracies are mixed ethnicity like most brazilians since their ancestors arrived on Brazil they mixed with the locals, they are not "pure" scottish breed, so without disregarding the scottish warrior culture I think that what made the difference was also the brazilian mixing. I mean Judo and Jujutsu was introduced to many countries in the world including the UK, but only in Brazil there was this revolutionary development in the grappling martial arts.
