To understand Socialism one just need to look at China today. Chinese Communism is now also known as Socialism with Chinese Characteristics. China is neither a Socialist democracy nor a Democratic socialist society. Screw Democracy. Democracies will inevitably fail as it did 2500 years ago in Athens into mob rule, anarchy, and lawlessness, as accurately predicted by Socrates, as it is failing in USA today. You may call the system and policies used in China Socialist Capitalism, meaning Socialism first, or the good of the people first, and Capitalism is only a tool. The problems with USA is first and foremost Democracy meaning be as selfish as you want and screw the public good., followed by treating Capitalism as an ideology which is some kind of superstition. Democratic capitalism or capitalist democracy is unrealistic and against human nature. Human nature is wanting to be rich. Capitalism means rob the poor mass to pay the few riches. Democratic capitalism means the few riches, by hook or by crook, make the poor mass they robbed somehow believe it is all legit because they have voted these idiots to be their representatives.
Elites, heroes, and lucky riches are myths. In modern societies, no one can succeed without the help, kindness, and generosity of the society and its people. No one should therefor be entitled to extreme wealth and social status. Can Capitalism ensure that ? No. Can Socialism ensure that ? Yes. That is why the irresponsible and cocky Jack Ma's are purged in China.

Capitalism has no border. China rely on the rest of the world, and the world rely on China, particularly in this era of globalization where China has the complete supply chain and USA has only some stuff that is not very important to the big picture. It is a mistake for USA to fight China because it is inevitable that USA will lose against the masters of Sun Tzu strategies.
China's debt is funded by internal savings, not by borrowed money like USA. USA is not the globe. China can decouple with USA and still have Asia, Middle East, Europe, Africa, and Latin America to trade with. Plus, the internal demand in China can absorb half of what China can produce. In Chinese Capitalism, Capitalism is only a mean to achieve Socialistic goals, and never is Capitalism an end in itself. In other words, in China, everyone is subordinating his or her own self interest to the interest of the public good.
As for USSR, they failed because they were not able to use Capitalism as a mean, resulting in people losing their drive to work or to contribute.
European Socialist countries are successful because they are rich in resources and have very few population to feed. China has a huge population and limited resources. On top of that, all the powerful industrialized countries ganged up together and tried to rape China in the 18th century and even now. We Chinese called the 18th century the hundred years of humiliation, and we called today our contribution to the common destiny of the world's humanity. Humanity is where our final profit lies.

You asked me what happened at Tiananmen Square incident on June 4, 1989. I wasn't there. I believed what happened was the CIA and the MI6 were paying and arming the young students to protest and demonstrate at the Square to overthrow the Chinese government for many days, and the CCP was holding back because they were afraid of violence breaking out. After the protestors were getting more rowdy and showing their weapons, Deng, the president at the time, was forced to do something to protect the people. He ordered the PLA, People's Liberation Army, to move in and the PLA opened fire. An estimated 3000 student protestors were killed in the incident. It was not good, and it was shameful for the Chinese. But, it was considered necessary at the time. The good news is, after the incident, there has not been any more armed protest or violent protest in China for more than thirty years. With thirty plus years of peace and stability, China was able to make huge economic progress. China lifted 800 million people from extreme poverty, a miraculous achievement no other nation in the history of mankind has ever come close to matching. Even the recent white paper protest in China was conducted peacefully, and the CCP listened and dropped the zero COVID mandate to the wish of the people. And you know what happened ? USA immediately started restricting Chinese travelers from entering USA. Canada, Australia, and European countries followed USA. See how full of shit these idiots are ? China lockdown with appropriate scientific data to warrant it, and China opened up with appropriate scientific data to warrant it. Law is not stagnant. Law is dynamic. USA allows revision of the constitution. The problem is who can revise the constitution or stop the revision of the constitution ? The rich and the power, by hook or by crook, and by corruption which is mostly legal in the US. Therefore the rich and powerful is above the constitution in USA.
In China, the CCP is the law. No individual, organization, or religion can be above the law in China. The CCP is charged with the responsibility to make law, to administer law, and to make any necessary revision of the law including the Constitution. The CCP is not one individual. It has 90 million members which is a number greater than the entire population of UK, or of France, or of Germany, or of Italy, or of Canada, Australia, and New Zealand combined. The irony is all these little countries are thought to have no one above the law. LOL !!! Every member in the CCP are sworn to uphold the public interest ahead of any individual's own self interest, unlike politicians and judges in USA who are expected to mind their own self interest and screw others as they please : the so called Democracy. Corruption is illegal in China.
