As for aging or declining populations have higher per capita income, the arithmetic is very simple : no need to increase the GDP, just reduce the population. Yet, China's per capita GDP sucks. The Chinese real estate market dropped about 60% on the average and it looks like it will drop another 90% from todays market price. Why ? The gap between the Chinese economy and the US economy is pulling wider apart. Half of college grads cannot find employment. Massive layoffs means if you are over 35 you might as well retire early and lay flat. Falling housing market means most of the middle class is now in poverty with negative net worth. Falling stock market means there is no hope for a revival. In contrast, USA and Japan stock markets are setting new record highs meaning good time is to come.
