Comments by "HIFLY" (@HIFLY01) on "Should you switch to solar? - Shannon Odell" video.
The sun gives off a lot more energy than we can harness but even the most effective solar panels absorb 1/3 of the energy. And thats the absolute best case and not anything that can be massed produced. Major issue with solar besides it being only used in the day time is it takes up a whole lot more land than other forms of energy. Plus all those materials need to be mined too so its honestly less eco friendly than a lot of people think

@vanivanov9571 $17k-20k for your house is pretty expensive. Even with the 60% decrease thats still $8k and you won't see your investment return for 7 years. Thats a pretty big hit on anyone's bank account below the upper class
9
@deathsinger1192 as this video said, solar panels won't return your investment until 7 years which is similar to why nuclear reactors are "expensive". They have a high initial investment and don't return it for a near decade but when you spend millions instead of a few thousand, investors don't want to deal with that. If you really want to help the environment, digging up the earth for lithium, silicone, copper and other materials for thousands of homes is far worse than a single building

@officialspock you can dump it in my backyard if it means not clearing forests for solar fields. I'll take one for the team and help mother nature
5
@deathsinger1192 you're right but unlike a nuclear powerplant, solar only lasts a decade and the panels will need to be replaced. Once you build the powerplant you're set for at least half a century. Point is they both require mining which is harmful but if we're going to do it we might as well do the option that requires mining for less and having it last longer

@officialspock tell me you're still in middle school without telling me you're still in middle school

My only concern with this is theres no talk about the negatives behind it. Everything has a negative impact and when it comes to renewal energy its just glanced over and instead talked up like its a new super technology. Does solar or wind produce green house gasses? Not on their own but in the process of gathering the resources it sure does. Chopping forests and destroying ecosystems to put up solar fields sure isn't saving the planet. During the night or calm wind free days, how willwe have power? Batteries? Oh boy the destruction those cause. Old wind turbine blades? What do we do with them? They're just going into landfills. Fusion and fission are our only hope and while fusion isn't there yet, we are getting there
3
@deathsinger1192 so you're the type of person who wants solution now without thinking of the future consequences? Like big oil does? If you haven't noticed, people have been saying the world is going to end by climate change in the next X amount of years for the last 50 years. Yet we're still here. In the 200 years it'd take for our uranium supply to run out (where ever you got that number from) we'll already be using fusion power. Even by 2028 we're excepted to have a positive power gain for longer than a fraction of a second like what happened last year. But digging for lithium and cobalt with child labor and having the chemicals spill out into the environment like what already happens today but on a larger scale isn't going to save our planet in the long run. Dont be a boomer and give solutions that only help your generation. Thats how we got here the first place

@williammeek4078 please see other comment about less typing and more reading. Especially when you think batteries would last 25 years lol. Thats like 6 times longer than the real number unless you have some magic battery lol
1
@nonyabizness.original I really wish these videos would show the truth behind renewable energy. Solar is good because the sun hitting the photocells doesn't create co2 but mining lithium for batteries and silicone is so much worse than what these videos show. Also destroying eco systems to create the fields needed too
1
TedEd used to be so good at talking about both sides but this video didn't mention any negatives
1
@fuewabutz4784 why would you jump to that conclusion? Everyone who finished high school knows nuclear, both fusion and fission is the way to go. No one except China is pro coal
1
@FlyingDwarfman your first point is completely false. They're not just put in desserts or inhospitable land. You can put them on roofs sure but that as the video said already not every roof was designed that way Raising them to be higher is a great way to also raise the costs and add more risk of injury
1
@williammeek4078 you made multiple comments but instead should have actually looked into it more. No where did I say anything about being pro fossil fuel but if you want to talk about it, maybe look at how much more fossil fuels are used to make solar cells and batteries than it would be to make a nuclear reactor that makes the same amount of enery as a solar farm. Hmmm less typing more reading bud
1
@williammeek4078 did you not watch the video? The specifically said not all roofs are designed for it. Plus look at how buildings are made. Tall vs wide. A 10 story building couldn't fit all the panels needed for the power itd use. Jeez dude do some research and think
1
@willy4170 you realize the issues with mining sand right? The coast disappearing, big machinery to dig giant holes, not all sand is usable, plenty of things you should look up before commenting. Like sand being in short supply to begin with due to above issues
1
@willy4170 the amount of silicone required today is a lot less than what would be needed to make solar panels effective on a world scale, even national scale. Not to mention you do realize that silicone isn't the only thing required right? I shouldn't need to say this because its so obvious but solar panels only work in the day time when power is used the least. In order to store the power you need to have a battery and theres tons of issues with that. You heard about Tesla mining cobalt with children to make batteries for cars? How do you think it will happen when you need more for a single house than a car? Theres also land that is an issue. Cant put them up in places where theres no sun or tons of snow. Its not just "install panels, free energy" that so many people think it is. If you really cared about the environment, you'd look into the negatives as well. World isn't a fairy tale
1
@willy4170 also lots of beaches have sand dumps to refill their receding coast. Might not physically dig up the beach but they're definitely using it on the beaches to replace it
1
@willy4170 if pointing out not everything will be care and worry free is considered rambling then boy I'm glad I'm not you
1
@willy4170 never said solar is bad, I simply said the negatives of it like all things in life have. You'd understand that if you actually read instead of typing paragraphs about silicone (which was never the main problem with getting resources to begin with). And you're right im ignoring the multiple paragraphs you're sending because you're not even understanding the issue to begin with. Might as well talk about robotics or apple trees if you're going to not pay attention
1
@willy4170 the video mentioned 1 downside and that it was not every roof can have panels. You can read other people's comments and see that people are taking this as the greatest thing since sliced bread. You mention any downside and morons take it as you're anti solar (sound familiar?) What point are you trying to make exactly? Its good?

@Xever2x yeah even $5k is still pretty expensive for a lot of people, including myself. I don't own my own house yet but all the money in my savings is $20k. I have a pretty good job but I'm trying to pay off my student loans as fast as possible to avoid interest. Even if I had my own house now, $5k would be 25% of my entire savings account. I'd personally like to pay it up front because those loans or pay over time deals really screw people over with interest. Plus I live where it snows in the winter and storms hard in the summer. Cant really use them if they're covered in snow or if theres tornado warnings. I fall in the group where it doesn't seem worth it now even if I had a house

Wait you're not supposed to say renewal has flaws. Thats not possible (sarcasm)
