  5. It used to be that the US and USSR competed to "make you a deal you can not refuse", basically giving weapons for "free" (with lots of strings attached). Other companies/countries just trying to make a buck couldn't compete with that except with those who didn't want those strings.

  7. I was hoping someone would mention this. There is also that the US and EU "frowned upon" anyone buying Russian kit, and could and do "lean on" countries that break ranks and buy from Moscow. The US sanctions against Turkey in 2017 for example.
