As the old saying goes, "In aviation, regulations and procedures are written in blood".

"What happened to the airplanes?" Short answer? Imperial Socialism. (poke poke) Long answer? Probably a failure of the oxygen and/or pressurization system which led to crew incapacitation via hypoxia. This would explain the lack of distress call and why no wreckage was ever found. The planes flew on their trimmed course until fuel ran out and then crashed well off their flight route. Why? Because the post war British government insistence on creating both domestic airlines and civil airline industry, without providing adequate investment and meddling in a free market where better options were more effective. This lead to cost cutting such as having to use an obsolete airframe as the basis of a "new" aircraft. Only 38 of this entire line of aircraft were built but 7 were destroyed in accidents, most of them from, not pilot error.
