  1. You hypothesis of a flaw in the SRB isn't likely correct. A malformed motor grain will either produce poor thrust or it will cause spontaneous disassembly of said rocket motor. The missile launched and was flying fine for the first few seconds of flight, so that really rules out a propulsion failure. Some Russian SAMs and SSMs have boost phase guidance, in fact they maneuver like this right after leaving the tube/rail with control fins and vernier thrusters. But they usually don't try to go back to the launcher. Very much a guidance fail.
