  4.  @algizmo7079  You can even go back further it was a battle ground during Russian civil war, and even further back in the chaos after WWI where Ukraine and Poland fought over disputed territory. But Putin's nostalgia was for the Imperial period where Russia dominated the region off and on for centuries.
