This isn't a new phenomenon, there was huge attrition during the Arab-Israeli wars on both sides. Likely one of the intents of the "2 week special military operation" was to make sure it was only 2 weeks, and be the decisive victory that forced a Ukrainian capitulation before attrition eroded the combat power of the force. Just like Israeli planning was for quick decisive campaigns to over come the strengths of the Arab armies. Raising mechanized formations isn't cheap or quick. Like you said, both sides are rapidly burning thru equipment and ammunition stocks that were built up over 50 years. Both sides had declining populations of military age males and both have significant challenges in recruiting. This is really the first modern high intensity war of attrition. The US and some NATO countries, and by circular reaction, the WARPAC states built up huge stockpiles and formations at tremendous cost. I'm not sure, we could really do the same thing the same way again in a post-industrial era. Or even should. The answer is probably going to be "send in the drones" , remote and autonomous systems and munitions. These are both cheaper and faster to produce (if you have the capacity and/or secure supply lines), and more lethal, probably too lethal for humans to be directly effective on a battlefield for long. There is some truly terrifying stuff in the pipelines as a result of the Russo-Ukraine war.

@spankeyfish That isn't actually true. As demonstrated by the UAF's offensive into Kursk. What can't be taken for granted is peace-time like rear area security where you could have vehicles lined up fender to fender. But units have to remain dispersed in hides until mission start and then conduct tactical movements all the way thru the LOD and begin the actual operation. Something it seems the Russians took a long time to figure out.

No offense but if you are this far into the weeds on military analysis to find these interesting, you should probably already know these acronyms. I find myself skipping ahead, and explaining them eats up a lot of video time. Probably just an on screen definition note card would serve I think?

@иванандреев-ч5н You were doing so well until you started regurgitating the same false Russian paranoid narcissistic narrative. The US did not "install" the Ukranian government and it nor NATO want to do any thing but trade with Russia. FSRs want to join the EU because its in their interests and they want to join NATO because Russians are assholes.

@Wien1938 Problem is getting that ceasefire when the Russians think they have the advantage.
