@pietpiekstra-sl1vr He means more the scale and stakes of the conflict. The US has not had a "peer-to-peer" war of national survival that Ukraine is facing since its Civil War.

The costs of the low intensity conflicts in Iraq and A-stan were low compared to the high-intensity war in Ukraine. US forces would likely suffer more casualties and cost in 20 days of combat operations than they did in 20 years of the WOT. And that is without the very likely risk of escalation of the war to other regions, that do not even need to "go nuclear" to cause wide ranging effects. The West has no real national interest in the Russo-Ukraine war, other than the moral outrage and precedent for collapse of "international law" it represents. Despite Russian disinfo, NATO was not trying to surround Russia, and a return to the 2006 status quo of Ukraine being a "client state" of Russia would make no geopolitical or economic difference globally.

@pietpiekstra-sl1vr You've still missed the point. The big cemeteries are just a reminder, but its not the lived memory of the pain and suffering. Most people that see them don't even care unless they have an interest in history.

I guess comprehension isn't for everyone.

@Stef3m Ah no. Ukraine losing this war has zero impact upon NATO. It will do nothing to make NATO members leave, in fact it has grown by 2 due to it. We will all feel bad if Ukraine loses, but there is not the political or public will to actually commit NATO to the war. This is something of NATO's Achilles heel, while it is very powerful in defense, it is "all or nothing", and its less enthusiastic members (Hungary, Romania, Turkey) will prevent it from going to war even if Poland or German sent troops. Putin knows this and why the bastard thinks he can win. All he has to do out-bleed Ukraine to win.

Ukraine's strategy: " Fight tooth and nail for national survival". How 'bout that? Who else finds it amazing that Republicans have found a war they don't like and are turning out to be Putin's best allies?

Its worse than than, Russians instinctively self-censor themselves because its culturally ingrained and their current political environment makes it hazardous to speak your mind. So even when you go get interviews and polls from their side, they aren't honest opinions.
2
@JinKee Unfortunately Russian leaders have traditionally been willing to let their people bleed longer than their opponents.
2
@niallodonnell8860 You say that like its a bad thing...
2
@kogorun Imperial Japan thought that too in 1941. Didn't turn out to well for them.
2
@bloodgout Did you learn that from Call o' Dudy?

The bookend to this argument would be the USS Vincennes shoot down of Iran Air 655. Even though Vincennes had great (relatively) systems, procedures, and awareness, it's crew still made a mistake and engaged.

Its unlikely that Russia would ever allow Ukraine to assemble a nuclear weapon. As unlikely as Russia "allowing" it to join NATO. Either would be considered defeat, because the entire war aim is to return Ukraine to Russian domination. Putin is betting that NATO will not find the national interest enough to commit the treasure AND blood it will take to force Russia to capitulate. So "once the war is over" is a HUGE handwave at this point.

All they have to do is keep beating their square peg of Ukraine fault into the round hole of the terrorist attack facts until its accepted where it only matters, domestically. Its just another page in Putin's book of myths and lies supporting his war.

@ArchOfficial Try actually reading my post.
1
@arjan2777 That actually isn't true. If Ukraine "wins", that will require a long term security commitment and aide from the West to keep Russia from just trying again. If Russia "wins", it doesn't mean they are going to or even be capable of, threatening anywhere else. They haven't articulated any such motivation. You are regurgitating Western/Ukrainian propaganda rational. Either way this war stops, without Putin's government collapsing and a... less archaic and corrupt one replacing it, the conflict will remain and Western defense spending will have to remain higher for the foreseeable future.
1
@CaptainPlanet90 That is false and ignorant. The US's national debt is fueled by domestic spending on programs, not defense or military aid. Likewise, US prosperity comes from its engagement and dominant world geopolitical position.

@CaptainPlanet90 Always good to hear from the low information MAGA crowd.

I doubt this talk about talks is to get on Trump's good side.

@philipliethen519 I'm sure its just a troll and its words would be cut n' paste propaganda.
