Yeah, DTC should have always been a side revenue stream and they should have been primarily a diagnostics provider to healthcare providers, marketing to docs and insurance cos is a lot cheaper than to the mass market, and then they sell your products for you. They should never have even thought about entering the money pit of disease research, simply provided (aggregated and anonymized) data to those researchers at university and companies, most of whom are on the government dime. But Wojcicki wanted to be a rockstar Tech CEO not a boring health-tech service provider.
