  1. The smilie is that they are sub-human. Even a loved pet is still beneath a person in stature and importance. At least to most people besides their owners.

  2.  @starmaker75  That isn't true. At times in medieval Europe cats were hunted down and exterminated as evil. Its more accurate to say Man is not dogs (or cats) best friend.

  3.  @Noam_.Menashe  Yep. That is mostly the reverence and identification with powerful predators. Why many sports teams today are named after them. Lions, tigers, bears, oh my.

  7. Its the duality of dog's relationship with humans as companion but subservient. There are plenty of disparaging phrases for dogs in English/Western culture, where its an almost universal taboo against being cruel or eating them. There no reason to think it would be different in Jewish and early Christian society.
