The Russians didn't try to bypass Ukrainian cities, it just failed to take them. All of their lines of advance were directed at population centers in the East and the capitol. They didn't even get past the suburbs because their combined arms doctrine sucks/was poorly executed and so they had to resort to obliterating urban areas with artillery and airstrikes. PLA does not have a manpower shortage and their urban combat potential/effectiveness is an unknown. Chinese armies have traditionally not been shy about pouring bodies into a fight. Your analogy, like your thesis, is wrong.

@Anonymous Bosch Oh you believe the "Kyiv was a diversion, derp" eh? Russia didn't expect the Ukrainians to perform any better than they did in 2014. The deployment of the VDV clearly shows they fully intended capture at least the West bank and government district.
