You can see that there was a fire in the engine bay from leaking propellant and at least one engine still firing in addition to the center gymbol control ones. So this was causing the tumble. No amount of software or control authority probably would have prevented it. Its really even amazing that the booster continued to fly and reached staging with that much damage and "off nominal" trim. Remember, the last time a rocket like this was tried war the Soviet N1. And all four blew up well before staging.
