  2. The word "sandwich" originates in the 18th century, but the Romans had the "isicia omentata", the hamburger. They probably surely also had sausage on bread, i.e.; the hotdog. Most cultures who had bread would also serve other foods on it, but it was so mundane and common that it doesn't make into the record and cookbook. Yes unleavened bread tacos are "sandwiches". The dividing line IMO is if you put the food in the bread its a sandwich, as opposed to if you use pieces of bread to pick up the food, as is common in African, Indian, or Mid East cuisine.
