  1.  @mikkosaarinen3225  "Plans" don't mean plans that would actually be used. Most militaries have hundreds of contingency plans for all sorts of implausible scenarios such as nuking your friends. In the US its a common Command and Staff College assignment to write up a war plan based on some hypothetical conditions. These get dutifully done, and then filed away until someone leaks them to the public out of context that it was just a thought exercise. If you are referring to "Able Archer 83", no that is not true. The Soviets did go to high alert, but there was no launch order given.

  2. Not just at launch. The things are pretty much built in the open air, right on a wind-swept coastal marsh. That said the rules are dumb and pointless in the long run if you expect dirty nasty humans to be there some day.

And they would not be prefab or zero-maintenance (not to mention the computers and uplink) so you would need to move a few thousand people to Antarctica too. There is a zero chance this would get past Greenies and regulators even if you had the money.

  20. They did do supersonic wind tunnel tests to see if the shockwaves would negatively effect flow. Probably as long as it didn't do that, that was good enough. The margins on man rated launchers were such that any benefit would have been negligible.

  22. I didn't. It wasn't funny in a show that pretends to be realistic. As soon as they stepped into sunlight they would have felt like they were on fire. Within a minute they would be in heat stroke as the radiation and perfect insulation of vacuum literally cooked them. It was dumb.

  29.  @topsecret1837  Watch the video again. The ignition flashed up into the engine nozzles and they began to combust uncommanded. While this probably wasnt' detonation and hopefully didn't damage the engines, it very much fits the definition of abnormal or hard start.

  36. That is very true about repurposing old data to make new discoveries. I recently attended a presentation by Dr. John Hood, who used radio telescope CMB data to track the variability of galactic nuclei quasars and blazars over time.

  37. What Seal said. Worse still is that Venus' atmosphere is also a very good thermal insulator. Probably one of the reasons Venus still have volcanism even without a moon or magnetic dynamic core to keep churning it's crust, is that it still has a lot of thermal energy trapped.

  42. The Catalina did not have a truss wing. They were just old school braces to take the stresses on the central pylon. The PBY was designed as a long range recon aircraft, it didn't need to go very fast and so that is why it looked like that

People can just barely manage to self-immolate themselves, by literally just sitting there and dying. But any kind of higher function or task? Not a chance. It was bad writing.

Sorry you can't distinguish that. At a certain point, lizard brain takes over from monkey brain. Most people who self immolate themselves, which is the closest real world experience to this scene, it takes all their will to sit still and most wind up running wildly as lizard brain takes over. A complex task is... dumb.
