@mikkosaarinen3225 "Plans" don't mean plans that would actually be used. Most militaries have hundreds of contingency plans for all sorts of implausible scenarios such as nuking your friends. In the US its a common Command and Staff College assignment to write up a war plan based on some hypothetical conditions. These get dutifully done, and then filed away until someone leaks them to the public out of context that it was just a thought exercise. If you are referring to "Able Archer 83", no that is not true. The Soviets did go to high alert, but there was no launch order given.

@tonyhawk123 Its probably not the only thing that tells the computer to ignite the motor.

They did do supersonic wind tunnel tests to see if the shockwaves would negatively effect flow. Probably as long as it didn't do that, that was good enough. The margins on man rated launchers were such that any benefit would have been negligible.

@profpep Yeah, pretty much like a bullet and very short ranged. Thus its limited utility and why all torps aren't supercavitating today. There probably are some secrut squirrrel systems out there that no one in the public will see until bad things happen.
