  1. From a personal point of view, I don't think that religion should come into the slaughter and consumption of animals at all. We are all humans and, as Simon pointed out, the slaughter houses are horrendous places. If the majority of meat eaters spent a day in one of those places, they'd probably find it difficult to eat meat again, because there's nothing "humane" about the killing and death of those animals. I have no set religion, and rarely eat meat, except occasional fish and the odd bit of chicken. The fact is that I don't have the willingness or ability to kill an animal, and I suspect that most people don't, either.
