Just folks trying to get by, same as the rest of us.

I vaguely remember this area. My grandparents lived near-ish to here; I think one of my great-uncles worked at an auto factory in Highland. When the factories left, no jobs, no future.

Some of those houses would have gorgeous back in their time. How sad :(

Crumbling houses aside, it's a pretty area. Would have been fun as a kid, hiking and stomping around the woods....

When Gramps died and we were looking to sell their house, there was a big story about Highland Park's unpaid electric bill. One of the power companies came in and was pulling up poles right outta the ground..
24
This area had gotten hammered by tornadoes since the 50s; probably contributed to some of the decline

You could do an 8 hour episode on just Pittsburgh.

it (mostly) looks like neighborhoods of working families doing the best they can.

When there's no industry, there's no jobs and this is sadly what happens
10
I mean, its deffo seen better days but it's clean, there's businesses still operating and people still living there.

Wouldnt it be fun, with no time or money constraints, to pick one of these beautiful old buildings and restore it

Ok the rooster at 10:28 looks plump and sassy. the rest were kinda scrawny.

It always saddens me and I wish I knew the answer for fixing the sad state of this area.
5
Another great vid, H&H. City may be down on its luck but its clean and tidy in the areas you went through
5

Be careful out there, HnH

The church closed right up after Pastor Duff died a couple years back. Sister Thelma died last year or 2021.

You go everywhere!

They were good people. As poor as they were==poor as church mice, literally==they opened their home and fed any one in need. The church never got enough in offerings to pay the electric or anything but Pastor and Sister Thelma paid out of their own pocket to keep the doors open. Lord rest them both.
