Most of these flights are so short they never get above the tropopause en-route, so any exhaust is going back to the ground very fast. Furthermore, turboprops are really clean and ideal for the EAS flights.

@forgottenfamily The US without rural population would be a "Judge Dredd" environment that would turn violent very fast. Suburban and rural areas are the release valve that stops cities from becoming nightmares.

"Daddy, where does food come from?"

Show me a nation that has built high speed rail to a rural area.

The good ole' "eel" vs "aisle" argument?

@huskiefan06 Simply put, if they stopped producing your life would become a whole lot tougher. Essential foods would have to be imported from overseas without any FDA oversight at prices determined by the commodities markets. This would cause artificial scarcity and price increases that would not just harm your wallet, but also make what is in the worth less because the only thing being produced in the USA at the present time that has innate value is agricultural products. It is one of the primary reasons you are allowed to get away with having a fiat reserve currency. No other nation on earth comes close to production level. It is the rural people of your nation that guarantee it stays that way. You can try screwing them out of the little things like EAS and whatnot, but keep in mind that they can screw you back as the 2016 election clearly demonstrated.

@huskiefan06 I'm sorry, but aren't you forgetting that there is a middle man missing from your equation? The commodities trader. They will not allow the price increases you are talking about because they will simply find another source (which often tends to be...government subsidized). The margin for profit is kept artificially slim because of the global market, which means that US farmers are stuck in an eternal rat race to optimize yield based on price forecasting. Food stamps really has nothing to do with it since they are part of government subsidies of the poor for social maintenance. Subsidies of farmers is a form of strategic economic maintenance, in the same vein as a bailout for a bankrupt but keystone corporation like GM.

Jesse K I get where you are coming from. Morally, it is wrong to prop up corporations that cannot cut it. However, in the end analysis, protecting the national economy takes priority over feels. By all right and reason, GM should have been allowed to die back in 2008. It would have destroyed the US and possibly global economy, but it should still have happened. For politicians though, it would have been a stick of lit dynamite. Any politician found responsible for the outcome would have been axed, so there was no chance of it happening, just as there is zero chance of farmers subsidies going away because as Hillary Clinton can testify to, you never insult the voters and then expect them to vote for you.

Don't worry. They always get even at the poll box. Ask Hillary Clinton.

Political influence. Want to win those juicy electoral college votes? Keep them connected to the rest of the country, or enjoy losing the election. Same reason why Amtrak still exists.

Kalash Chandak Examples please. Please make sure that the routes are serving population centers that are on par with the rural areas of the USA. Don’t give a route that serves a city of 2 million and then call it rural, because it is not.

Kalash Chandak High speed rail or old commuter rail?
1
Kalash Chandak Yes, that is correct. It doesn’t exist because it is not worth it.
