If Maduro arrests so much as one US diplomat in Venezuela, he will learn very quickly that Donald Trump is not Jimmy Carter.

Pancho Villa Venezuela owns a significant amount of property inside the US, which by default involves the US. If Trump really wanted to be a dick to them, he could just confiscate and nationalize their assets, which would bankrupt them but be justified as Maduro did that to the US. China and Russia and Iran are essentially just money lenders in this situation; if Maduro gets killed and a new pro US government takes over...they lose all the investment they (foolishly) put in. Russia and Cuba are especially nervous because a pro US government could choose to fuck them over by exposing and intelligence assets that were shared with Maduro, which would drive them nuts. Then, there is Brazil. If Brazil gets involved, they could literally invade and take a chunk of land which would make Bolsonaro look like a god to his people. This is far more complex than you think.

rtorres81rc You are incorrect. Jimmy Carter didn’t give anything because he was out of office in 1981, when the Soviets had invaded only in 1979. It was Reagan, or rather Congress and the CIA that paid for Egyptian made Russian weapons to be given to the mujahadeen. Carter was an impotent President.

Sparky Milo Mussolini was hanged and his corpse shot and stabbed. Saddam was hanged. Qaddafi was sodomized with a butchers knife by a teenager, then shot in the head. Know your executions!

Roland Carver Sorry, but are you implying that the CIA would kill our on embassy workers and try to blame it on Maduro? That sounds extremely risky, even for them.

silent watcher Using military force? That seems like an excellent justification for a military response from Trump. It’s possible that is the intent of it all.

rtorres81rc What sort of aid did Carter give to the opponents of the government? It does not surprise me that Carter would have offered assistance to those against a pro-Soviet government (the US was fighting the Soviet Union in brush fire wars since the time of the Berlin crisis pretty much). But what sort of aid?

Roland Carver Because he doesn’t have to, that’s why. Maduro has retracted his threat as of a few days ago and is now clinging onto what remains of his power. The population of Venezuela is marching against him, and his own generals are starting to either openly denounce him or are secretly plotting against him. And Trump has achieved this by mere words, not actions. Maduro isn’t stupid (I hope). He has seen videos of the fates of Qaddafi and Ceaucescu, and does not want to have that done to him.

silent watcher Too bad that Maduro retracted his threat to arrest the US diplomats in Caracas. It would have been an interesting show. But you have to wonder why Maduro changed his tune all of a sudden. Did he get smart on his own, or did Putin or Xi give him a red pill?

Damien Thorn If Maduro did that he would poison his own people and go down in history as a villain of the likes of Saddam Hussein, who did exactly what you are talking about. Not to mention that Venezuela’s neighbors in SA and the Caribbean would not be very happy with pollution floating their way from there.
