Genealogists will tell you that Alabama is actually not that inbred when compared to the Cajun people in Louisiana. And the rate of accidental inbreeding among Europeans is way higher than in the US.

Casey Hall Exactly. This happens far more often than most people know, and is only exposed if the two parties are aware of their pasts and actually take the time to talk about it. While the 2nd cousin marriage is not too common, 3rd through 5th happens very often. In some nations like Iceland, where they have a geographically confined population, this is of such concern that they have apps to help couples determine their relationship to one another before they accidentally produce a new Jerry Lewis lookalike. In the US it is not a big deal though common descent from colonial era families is starting to become more frequent. We all HAVE to have some inbreeding in our families in order to fit into the ancient demographics, but it should always be limited and non repeating. A first cousin marriage once in 300 years is not going to harm the overall descendants.
