  1. Sorta kinda, but yeah pretty much true. The Barbary wars were a disgrace to Europe as they had always just paid off the Pashas, whereas the USA threatened them and achieved more permanent results. A weak, brand new nation with a joke of a naval fleet accomplished what the European powers could have done themselves.

  5.  @CarlGerhardt1  Yes, but they were not above buying the cheap cotton from the slave states and NYC for all the decades up to the Civil War.

  6. @ It is a long history starting with the revolutionary war, but let's be realistic - the US Navy did not come into a true posture of power until well after the Civil War.
