Did you fill out the form to close down his SS number? Usually the funeral home will have it there for you to complete, and once it is done the number is not reused for a while. A clown trying to get ID off of a dead SS number is easy prey for the FBI.

Nobody until recently ever paid attention to the SS death master index, which would have nailed this couple ages ago. Incompetence is the term to be used here.

Tons of US military assets are in Hawaii, which makes it along with California and Texas very attractive to spies.

@ButterfatFarms Cross checking it with PRI would have flagged it immediately. I just checked it myself and they don’t match. Stop trying to excuse civil servants for lazy behavior.

@dkahuna9956 If so, that means the VA has a nerd working for them. Good job on them for not trusting the system.

@peachjamez Even if a number is not shut down, a basic search is going to turn up red flags.

You want to know why? Because up until revenge, most states did not allow open access to vital records or public records on account of “privacy”, while unwittingly allowing foreigners to use false identities in the USA simply because they knew that it was illegal to look them up. This is why open access to vital records, especially of those who are deceased, is paramount to maintaining national security. How can an employer or realtor verify the identity of someone if they are forced to go on the blind faith that is social security numbers and drivers licenses?

@allangibson2408 While it is true that it’s useful, few foreign intelligence agencies pursue it. It doesn’t provide the benefits vs the risks. Kudos to you for mentioning the beast that is the Hukou system, which is great for centralized governance but horrible for class mobility. It damns people before they are even conceived.

Darn, where can I find that?

@aewtx The chances of getting nailed for that are much higher nowadays.

@moniqueuu8777 Social security master death index. Public information. The problem is that most people don’t know it is open under FOIA so they ignore it and “trust” the applicant under the honor system.

@rustinstardust2094 US military background checks are very basic and non invasive. If you look like an American to the recruiter, you must be one.

@lisavauhti7675 Maybe, but more than likely they had their application go in front of a nerd who saw what no one else was going to care about.

@kbnice2393 Yes, but these fools should have been caught long ago.

@ChiefQ83 Everyone up until now dropped the ball. I just looked up their information myself and none of it makes any sense; the names and numbers do not match. These two cruised through the system because the system is crap.

@allangibson2408 Even if the deaths were not registered with Social Security, the PRI would have indicated something was not kosher. They applied for a fresh SS number but put down the birthdate of a deceased individual; a simple cross check would have snared them long ago. If anything, this provides evidence why we need national ID.

@allangibson2408 An interesting but unlikely scenario. The Russians are not likely to waste a sleeper on some low level civil service job; they have bigger fish to fry. The more likely way it went down is they took the gamble knowing that Americans are lazy about security and won it for decades until they hit bad luck. I looked up their info on FS and Ancestry and they were easy peasy to find, as well as the children whose identities they took. Interestingly enough, the Texas death register lists the couple as dead, but I’ll bet nobody ever looked into it that deep.

@ServiceUnavailable It’s pretty simple. A birthdate was registered, as was a death date. The problem was that they were never directly tied together; no way to tell until recently that the individual had died unless someone did some research, which government employees are loath to do. What happened to these clowns is they got greedy, applied for VA bennies and their application went across the desk of a nerd who likely has been dreaming of snagging a cheater. Once the discrepancies were noticed, they were toast.
