  1. Your argument would work except for one detail. Bankruptcy. In an over competitive market, someone will lose and that typically results in bankruptcy. Two things can result from that. Either they disappear, and local politicians get fired for not defending jobs hard enough(socialism or cheating), or they are allowed to reorganize and become "efficient" i.e. drop their wages which results in pissed off employees and a race to the bottom in the industry, ruining even more lives in the process. What you are seeking is basically analogous to what farmers in the south pre civil war wanted. Cheap prices, high benefits, zero costs.

  2.  @SooperTrooper100  You cannot give good salaries if over competition is killing their ability to earn profit. This is exactly what happened in the 1980s, which was a blood bath for the airlines resulting in ruined jobs and careers all over the place.

  3. The problem with your statement is that airlines must connect passengers to other flights, as well as have the employees at the ready to service them. The Euro system sucks because you never know where you are going to be next, and the airport authority doesn't give a shit about comfort or convenience. Defined gates work better.

  7. This video is nonsense, because they are advocating CUTE terminals which is not compatible with non state owned carriers. If you want to nationalize the airlines, fine. But the moment taxpayers find out they are funding six figure salaries for airline employees while they are struggling to get by, all hell is going to break loose which will pit airline workers against the public for who pays for what. No one works for free.

Blame Wall Street and the SEC for that, but Reagan didn't do squat to cause that, and quite frankly he was right to fire the ATC guys because what they were doing was not just illegal but highway robbery of the public.

  20.  @evancombs5159  Solvency is not a guarantee of financial health. A great example of that is the recent Hawaiian-Alaska merger. In normal circumstances, the DOJ would have put a stop to it. They did the same with other mergers in the past, the US Airways-American merger/buyout being the better known. The DOJ is there to enforce anti-trust laws, but the problem is they also must answer to Congress when things they screw up. The reason they let US Airways-American go through is the same for allowing Alaska to buy Hawaiian. The DOJ does not want to get dragged up the hill by Congress and the Unions because their decision killed jobs, which is what they did a few months back with JetBlue-Spirit and now are being forced to answer for as Spirit is on deaths doorstep now, with no one to save them. If Spirit goes Chapter 7(it sure looks like it is going to happen), JetBlue is going to be in deep doodoo as well as Frontier, and you will see the majors be the beneficiaries of it. If you want to become a millionaire in the airline business, you need to start off as a billionaire first.

  22.  @xKarenWalkerx  They didn't make the money to pay their crews. Not for that flight. That flight was a loser, just like the others which explains why Spirit is on deaths doorstep now. Run the damn math, you cannot support $250k salaries with sky high fuel prices while giving rides away for free to the public. And don't bring Europe in as a counterargument, because Europe funds their airlines using taxpayer money and is highly protectionist, something the US is not.

  24. My only disagreement with you is CEO salaries. You cannot get, or expect to get, a Gordon Bethune on the cheap. Kellehers, Crandalls, Bethunes, are expensive and damn well should be. You want a cheap CEO? Goto Yale, get a degree then get the experience to survive the vetting by the board of directors as well as the shareholders(aka, the FUNDERS), then work the job for a crap wage, and see how long you last. You get what you pay for when it comes to leadership, and nobody in their right mind will lead for nothing.
