Why was the question removed from the census in the first place? It was perfectly fine to ask in the past when it was mostly whites immigrating to the USA, but now that illegals are part of the equation it’s not fair? It should never have been removed to begin with.

@Keith.Harvey It was placed on the census for a very good reason. There was a massive immigration surge into the USA at the time, and the government had to keep a tabulation of the numbers of immigrants to keep a reasonably accurate prediction of total population for a variety of purposes. They also used to ask questions about radio ownership, home ownership, nation of birth, etc. It should always have been on there and never removed.

@Keith.Harvey Baloney. Prior to the 1960s, if you lied about your citizenship status to the census takers you would eventually get caught. Thousands of people got deported irom 1890 forwards because they got arrested and found out on. The head count concept went out the window in the 1830s starting with the special census lists for farmers and eventually slaves. 1850 and onward your place of birth of yourself was asked, and in 1880 your parents place of birth was asked - a default predecessor to the citizenship question. This was decided on by congress at that time and there was zero argument against it.

@Keith.Harvey Every nation on earth has strict rules about who can and can not be naturalized citizens of their nation. The creators and the subsequent population have the innate right to determine who can come to stay and who should be rejected. What you are suggesting is not just merely irrational, but dangerous as well. A census is not just a head count, it is a demographic and social snapshot of the health of a nation.
