Anyone who was paying attention knew that the US was going to launch a satellite in 1957-58 as part of the IGY, and that the Russians had already announced they were going to try to beat us to the punch. On Oct 4, 1957 they did. But they had plenty of time to get ready, as we officially spilled the beans about our intent on July 29, 1955.
