  1. My grandfather was a BAR man who fought in Sicily all the way up through Italy. The most memorable story I heard was that his squad was pinned down by a group of Germans who were set up in a grove of trees. He volunteered to stay behind to provide his squad covering fire or else they were all probably dead. They went back to get his body the next day and found him passed out from firing so many rounds that the gas knocked him out. All the trees in the grove were cut down and all the Germans were dead. He got the Medal of Valor for that and a Purple Heart for being shot a couple times.
