How sad: America was founded by people who were enthusiastic participants in the Age of Enlightenment. As such, they embraced its belief that science would provide invaluable-indeed, critical- assistance necessary for humankind to continue to progress into the modern epoch. And today we have citizens who shrug resignedly and say, "The virus is going to do what viruses do." "Hey, you eggheads, cease and desist with that useless cancer research sciencey stuff. Everybody knows that cancer is going to do what cancer is gonna do. "Now take all your medical expertise and do something useful, like developing a pill that will cause me to lose fifteen pounds--without exercising and dieting--in time for my sister's wedding."
