In the film Losey mercilessly ratchets up the suspense and never lets go, all the time rooting his movie in profound moral questions --with a nod to Martin Niemoller ("First they came for the communists, and I did not speak out - because I was not a communist; Then they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out - because I was not a socialist...") as well as to Edgar Allen Poe's "William Wilson." Yes, you can deliver the thrills and social commentary and produce a truly powerful movie...provided that you do not feel compelled to tack on a gratuitous, wholly unexpected reversal as an ending.
