Not being allowed to go pass a red light if there's an ambulance behind with blue lights is just stupid. If there's an ambulance, fire truck and police car with lights on behind, I'm pretty sure running a red while moving over is allowed in all countries in continental Europe.

Dutch traffic lights are most efficient than compared to most traffic lights outside the Netherlands, but I don't like how Dutch traffic lights just goes from red to green like in the US.

US driving test is too short and less strict, even their parents can teach their teenage kid to drive on the public roads.

@KCML82 Why can't the entire Netherlands just adopt red + amber before green? I never understood why the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, France, Italy, Spain and Portugal adopted US-style sequence when rest of Europe uses red + amber before green.

@blabvla2002 Which I think it's a good thing, though in Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and even Russia have both on the traffic near-side and far-side of the intersection. I actually prefer having traffic lights both on the near-side and far-side of the intersection. But I'm not talking about the placement of the traffic lights, I'm talking about the sequence of the lights. I don't like how lights just go from red to green.

Even though I don't live in the UK, I find not being allowed to go through red lights to make way for emergency vehicles very stupid. I'm pretty sure running a red while moving over is allowed in all countries in continental Europe.

@Zileas01 Countdown timers is nice, but what about traffic lights without timers? Red and orange doesn't add confusion, is just simply means the light is about to turn green.

@Pancake_Nix I don't really live in the Netherlands, but I know their traffic lights sequence are very similar to the US system: red > green and green > amber > red. Belgium, Luxembourg, France, Italy, Spain and Portugal also uses red > green sequence.

@majorminor3367 I might be not be stupid for you, but most people disagree with you, In most of continental Europe, you're allowed to cross the stop line if there's an ambulance behind with blue lights. Around 2:29 cars moved out of the way, even if it's was red.

@lorrefl7072 Then explain why 99.9% of US drivers are poorly trained and don't get out of the way for ambulances or any emergency vehicles? Driving lessons in the US are much shorter, while driving lessons in Europe are far more expensive and stricter.

@MrLittle3vil What if pedestrians and cyclists may want to listen to music as well, listening to music does NOT necessarily means you sudden lost attention to your situational awareness. I don't get why people on the comments think that only car drivers should have luxury listening to the music while driving, but not pedestrian and cyclist? As Limburg82 said: "on an bike your actually on the road and not on an sidewalk" forgetting the fact that bike lane or bike paths do exist.

@johanwittens7712 "most European countries are still very very car centric just like the USA" At least they're still very walkable and public transit are everywhere. Car ownership is expensive in Europe, so people with cars either choose to drive or take the public transport.

@NLTops "Having lights on both sides is unnecessary" Tell that to Scandinavian and Baltic countries. You might think having lights on both sides is unnecessary, but them on both sides can be useful, especially if a junction still use incandescent traffic lights

@NLTops In my country people don't get into "start the race" (Get ready, set, GO!) mindset when seeing red + amber, they see it as the lights are about to turn green. Red + amber before green is safer and more convenient for drivers, yet the Dutch decided to adopt US-style red to green. I think traffic lights going from red to green should've been violation by Vienna Convention, well except for pedestrian signals.

@NLTops It's pretty clear that the Netherlands, along with Belgium, Luxembourg, France, Italy, Spain and Portugal just want to be like North America. Everyone outside those countries understands red + amber what mean and don't see it as "start the race" as you to call it. Red + amber doesn't add confusing, nor it adds "start the race" (Get ready, set, GO!) mindset, if you find it confusing, then don't drive outside the Netherlands Traffic lights in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Russia and Austria also use red + amber, however the green light does start flashing before turning amber.

@bringsallydown Holding your hand on the gearstick may cause unnecessarily wear on the transmission. I guess Dutch people don't seem care when their car parts wear and tear, but cries when their bike parts wear and tear?

@weeardguy Flashing green is actually a nice idea, so drivers get a better idea that it's about turn back to amber. I'm pretty sure traffic lights in Ukraine only flash amber at night or when they're inoperational.

@artemis754 "changing it now would only bring confusion" Literally most countries in Europe use red + amber before green and yet many Dutch people don't get confused when they drive to Germany or further east or north.

@thelaurens1996 Yes, but even parking spaces makes it harder of vans, most vans are still slightly narrower than most American pickup. There's lot of parking spaces usually reserved for vans at all times, or during certain hours.
