  2. Having traffic lights near the stop line is actually safer than only having traffic lights on the other side of the intersection. It's indeed easier traffic lights on the other side of the intersection, especially when stopping at the stop line. But most US intersections are usually at 90 degree angle, as most US cities and rural towns are grid-based, hence why most of US don't really need traffic lights near the stop line. Although few US cities have traffic lights near the stop line and on the other side of the intersections, most of UK and some European countries use this approach as well

  3.  @carultch  Sure some drivers are colorblindness, but what's even the point of have little teal/turquoise in color when all traffic lights in the UK are vertical mounted?
