They're called minivans because they're smaller than vans like Mercedes-Benz Sprinter and Volkswagen Crafter. Minivan is an American car classification for vehicles, just like MPV. The equivalent classification in Europe is the M-segment, which are MPVs. Unlike USA, MPVs are still common and popular in Europe.
